IS HAPPINESS THE NEW HEALTHY?

Updated: Aug 24, 2022

True happiness is enjoying your own company and living in peace and harmony with your body, mind and soul. Happiness does not require other people or material things. It is a consequence of personal effort and living a life of purpose.

Truth is, happiness is subjective. We all define it in our own way.

Nonetheless, there are 3 common things that make all people happy.

1. Pleasure, doing things you enjoy.

2. Engagement, being interested in your activities and connecting to others.

3. Meaning, feeling like what you do matters. It is time we all realize that real happiness comes from within. From making wise choices, including choosing to be happy.

So, how does happiness influence health? Health implies being free from illness or injury, but in truth, it is much more than that. Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease! Scientific evidence suggests that being happy benefits your health. The claim is that happiness promotes a healthy lifestyle, helps reduce stress and boosts your immune system. It protects your heart and reduces pain. Happiness may even increase your life expectancy!

Over the last few decades in the field of positive psychology, there’s growing scientific evidence connecting happiness to physical health and wellbeing. In one well known study, wellbeing, optimism, happiness, life satisfaction and vitality reduced heart disease by nearly 30% in people with a genetic predisposition to the disease. Positive emotions have a significant impact on physical health, resulting in a higher quality, healthier and longer life.

Simply put, studies show that happier people have a higher immune system, fewer chronic pain conditions and a lower risk of serious disease.

“Happiness cannot be travelled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude!” —Denis Waitly
